kNEON kNIGHT 5K RUN/WALK JUNE 29 PDF Print E-mail

AURORA – Hosted by South Dearborn High School volleyball, the first annual kNEON kNIGHT 5K Run/Walk is slated for Saturday evening, June 29.

The nighttime road race, a 3.1-mile fund-raiser for the Lady Knights spikers, will start at 9:30 p.m. and follow a course around the SDHS, middle school and elementary campuses.

The wearing of neon colors and attachment of glow sticks by runners and spectators are encouraged. Neon and glow-in-the-dark merchandise will be available the purchase on the evening of the race.

Pre-race registration, due by Saturday, June 15, is $15, including an official race t-shirt. Late registration is $20, not including a t-shirt.

Registration forms are available at the SDHS main office.

GREENSBURG – South Dearborn softball rolled out its big guns for an 11-1, five-inning victory over Lawrenceburg to open Class 3A Sectional 29 play Monday.

Ellen Barrett connected for her ninth home run of the spring, a two-run blast with Morgan Wolfer aboard and one out in the home half of the first inning.

Two batters later, winning pitcher Kooper Vertz drilled her first round-tripper of the season, a solo shot that mirrored Barrett's centerfield blast, keying a four-run first inning for the Lady Knights.

AURORA – Longtime South Dearborn High School staffer Chris Nobbe was named the Knights' new head football coach by unanimous 7-0 vote of the school board Monday night.

Nobbe succeeds Eric Lows, who posted a 20-31 mark in five seasons at his alma mater – including an 0-10 mark last fall. Lows was recently promoted to administrative assistant to SD superintendent Dr. John Mehrle, effective for the 2013-14 school year.

CARMEL, Ind. – South Dearborn baseball finished third in the always-tough Greyhound Classic eight-team tournament at Carmel Saturday.

Coach Jay Malott’s Knights defeated Chesterton, from northwest Indiana, 3-2 in first-round action Friday, then downed Martinsville in a 14-7 final round slugfest to cap regular season play late Saturday.

BROOKVILLE – South Dearborn's Makenzie Wheat and Ariel Biggs broke records to highlight Tuesday night's IHSAA girls track and field sectional at Franklin County.

Wheat, who's been good for at least one new record per week of late, surpassed the 1994 sectional standard of 41'2” by Lawrenceburg's Tonya Roach with her winning effort of 42 feet even.

The Bowling Green University-bound SD senior also won discus (177'7”) in the first real good-weather meet of the late-arriving spring, staged under sunny 83-degree conditions.

MADISON – South Dearborn's Ellen Barrett saw her streak of five consecutive games with home runs end in Tuesday's 13-3 softball victory over Madison.

But SD's slugging junior third baseman – currently batting .560 – has helped power the Lady Knights (14-4) to a late-season surge.

Coach Tim Barrett's fast-pitch crew posted back-to-back wins over EIAC rival Franklin County, 6-5 last Thursday night and 9-1 Monday, to cap its conference slate at 6-4.

RISING SUN – South Dearborn junior Brad Miller shot low medalist score in Monday's River Town Golf Classic at The Links.

Miller, just two days removed from earning all-conference honors in the EIAC tournament at Grand Oak, shot a three-over par 37 to tie with Rising Sun sophomore Bryce Murray in nine-hole regulation play.

WEST HARRISON – Dearborn County high school boys golfers brought up the rear in a soggy Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference Tournament at Grand Oak Golf Course Saturday.

Hosted by defending champion East Central, the 2013 EIAC tournament saw Greensburg emerge victorious for the first time since 2009, beating runner-up Batesville by nine strokes, 338-347.

AURORA – Eight new members will be inducted to the South Dearborn Athletic Hall of Fame Friday night, May 24.

Former Aurora High School basketball coach Don Ritter (1942), a 2011 inductee of the Indiana University Hall of Fame, heads the list for SD's 10th class of inductees.
